#Buying Guide: Garbage Disposals

Eliminate Kitchen WasteAn easy way to lessen the amount of garbage collected on a daily basis is to install a garbage disposal. Quickly and efficiently eliminate leftover potato peels, orange rinds and many other types of food products. Disposals easily grind up and flush food particles down your pipes, thereby lessening the amount of garbage you otherwise would accumulate every day.
As you shop for your new garbage disposal, consider:

  • would work best in your home?
  • Which sized motor handles the usage frequency you would need in a disposal?
  • What special feature options are most beneficial to you?
  • Do you have a septic tank?

 At Your Disposal

Garbage disposal units come in two basic forms—batch feed and continuous. Batch-feed models operate only when the disposal lid is engaged. Continuous models turn on with the flick of a switch and run until you turn the switch off. Although neither type of disposal is completely silent, models with larger cases are often better insulated and quieter.

Most homes require at least a 3/4 to a 1-horsepower unit—more power reduces the likelihood of jamming and means less time at the sink. A sink’s style may also affect your disposal choice. An inexpensive stainless-steel sink may not provide solid support for a heavier, high-powered model. An overpowering disposal may cause the surrounding countertop and cabinets to rattle.
Check out the links below to find the right fit for your kitchen:

Disposal Types
Batch feed
Batch feed models are generally safer because they require the use of stopper which covers the food particles and keeps them from flying out. Stoppers may be beneficial if you have children and need to use your disposal frequently. Batch feed models are slightly more expensive and do require a little more set up time.

Continuous feed
Continuous feed models require an electrical switch and cold running water to operate. A rubber shield generally prevents debris from shooting back out. Some models have an auto reverse function that eliminates jams.

Motor Size Overview
Most models come in varying ranges of horsepower to tackle different types of waste. Basic models come with as little as 1/3 horsepower, which is only effective on soft waste like vegetables. In-home disposers with motors less than 1/2 horsepower are not recommended for households with more than two people.
A 1-horsepower disposer works better if you produce large amounts of food waste. It can handle heavier loads and harder foods such as chicken bones. They also have better sound insulation and may run more quietly than an underpowered unit.

Features
Anti-Jamming
Models that possess anti-jamming devices eliminate simple jams and operate more smoothly. In some models, the blades periodically reverse directions to lessen the risk of jamming, while others have an auto-reverse mode that reverses the blades as a jam occurs. Some disposals feature manual anti-jamming in the form of a button on the unit itself or in an included hex wrench.

Quiet Operation
Higher end models feature enhancements that allow them to operate more quietly. The outer shell may be insulated, or there might be a sound baffle, both of which work to reduce vibration and noise. This feature is especially beneficial in environments where the disposal is in frequent use.
Stainless Steel
For lasting performance, look for a model that features a stainless steel grinding chamber, shredder, impeller and sink flange. Stainless steel provides greater durability and is less subject to corrosion from the acids released by food items as they are ground up.

Dishwasher connector
Many disposals allow you to connect them to your dishwasher to grind up solid food particles that wash off your dishes. The food feeds through a tube that runs from the bottom of the dishwasher to the disposal. Once debris is stored there, run the disposal to grind and eliminate it. This feature eliminates the time-consuming chore of pre-rinsing dishes before putting them into the dishwasher.
Septic Tanks
Overview
If you have a septic tank, keep in mind disposals increase water consumption and may require cleaning the tank more frequently. Also, disposing of tobacco products interfere with bacteria in septic tanks and reduce effectiveness. Seafood shells do not decompose inside septic tanks and create sludge.

Septic System Models
Certain models are designed specifically for use with septic systems and feature special cartridges that help break down food waste. Most cartridges need to be changed every 3-6 months.
